On another forum, somebody posted a vintage photo their grandfather took. They wanted to know what sort of plane was in the background. It turned out to be a De Havilland DH 4, while trying to find some good photos of one for them, I found this video.

Airmail in the 1920s was, pardon my French, completely farfelu. Limitations in navigation and communication meant planes were guided across the country by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! set into the ground by day, and flew by night guided by extremely powerful beacon lights placed every few miles. Emergency landing strips were constructed about every 25 miles along the routes.

De Havilland DH 4 biplanes were originally used during the 1st world war as bombers. After the war lack of development of new types in the U.S. led to many variations of the DH 4 being adapted for various uses, including transporting mail. Thousands were built, only a handful remain in any condition.
